Why Compliments Lie: The Founder Confirmation Trap
When you ask friends, colleagues, or casual testers: "Do you think this is a good idea?" they will almost always answer "Yes!" to be polite. But politeness does not validate customer demand or willingness to pay.
Rob Fitzpatrick's famous The Mom Test teaches founders to ask about past behavior and concrete actions rather than speculative future opinions.
3 Rules for High-Signal Customer Interviews
- Rule 1: Talk about their life, not your idea. Ask about the last time they encountered the problem, what tools they used, and how much time they wasted.
- Rule 2: Ask about past specifics, not generic hypotheticals. Instead of asking "Would you pay $20/month for this?" ask "What software tools are you currently paying for to solve this?"
- Rule 3: Listen more than you speak. If the founder speaks for more than 20% of the interview, it is a sales pitch, not user research.
